5 Air Conditioning Running Cost Myths — Debunked

Many homeowners overestimate how much air conditioning costs to run. Here we tackle the most common misconceptions with real numbers.

Conversations about air conditioning running costs often involve dramatically inflated numbers. Here are the five most common myths we encounter, and the reality behind them.

Myth 1: Air conditioning is too expensive to run

Reality: A 3.5kW split system running for 8 hours on a hot day costs approximately £2.80. Over a typical UK summer with 60 days of meaningful heat, that's around £168 — less than most households spend on coffee. Modern inverter systems are far more economical than older fixed-speed units, and far more efficient than any portable unit.

Myth 2: Leaving it running is more efficient than turning it on and off

Reality: This is true of old-fashioned fixed-speed systems. Modern inverter air conditioning automatically reduces output as the room approaches the target temperature, running at a fraction of full power when maintaining temperature. Leaving it running is not meaningfully more efficient than using a timer, and turning it off when the room is unoccupied always saves energy.

Myth 3: Air conditioning is only worth it if you use it every day

Reality: Many of our customers in loft conversions or south-facing bedrooms tell us that even a handful of genuinely hot nights per year makes the system worthwhile. Sleep quality during a heatwave is a genuine health issue, particularly for children, the elderly and anyone with respiratory conditions.

Myth 4: The bigger the unit, the better

Reality: Oversized systems are inefficient and ineffective. A system too large for the room will reach the target temperature quickly, switch off, and then allow the temperature to rise and cycle on again repeatedly — a process called 'short cycling' that wastes energy, causes wear and results in poor humidity control. Correct sizing, based on a proper heat load calculation, is one of the most important things we do at the survey stage.

Myth 5: Air conditioning is bad for the environment

Reality: As the UK electricity grid decarbonises, heat pump air conditioning becomes cleaner every year. The grid carbon intensity has already fallen by over 70% since 2012. An air conditioning system installed in 2026 will be powered by an increasingly clean grid over its 15–20 year life. For heating, it is already among the lowest-carbon options available for existing UK homes.
