Air Conditioning for Annexes

An annexe is a self-contained living space that deserves proper, independent climate control. Whether it houses an elderly relative, a dependent adult, or a long-term rental tenant, reliable heating and cooling is a requirement — not a luxury. Air conditioning provides efficient year-round comfort from a single, low-maintenance system.

Key considerations for air conditioning for annexes

Independent operation

Annexe systems should operate entirely independently of the main house — their own controls, their own thermostat, and often their own electrical circuit. We design for full independence.

Energy efficiency

For occupied annexes, running costs matter. Modern heat pump air conditioning is significantly more efficient than electric storage heaters or gas — often 3x as efficient. We'll calculate the expected running costs.

Whole-annexe coverage

Depending on the annexe layout, one or two indoor units may be needed to cover the whole space. We assess at survey and recommend the most practical and cost-effective configuration.

Elderly or vulnerable occupants

For annexes housing elderly occupants, we pay particular attention to safe, gentle airflow, simple controls, and systems with automatic temperature maintenance.

Why air conditioning works here

  • Independent, self-controlled comfort for occupants
  • Year-round heating and cooling from a single system
  • Significantly cheaper to run than storage heaters
  • Low maintenance — annual service is all that's required
  • Adds rental value and appeal to the annexe
  • Improves air quality through continuous filtration

System type

Annexes are typically served by one or two split systems depending on their size and layout. The outdoor unit mounts externally on the annexe itself where possible, or on the main house wall. We design for complete operational independence.

Frequently asked questions

Can air conditioning replace the central heating in an annexe?

Yes — in well-insulated modern annexes, heat pump air conditioning can be the sole source of space heating. It's significantly more efficient than electric heating and increasingly replaces gas in new builds. We'll advise on suitability at survey.

Who controls the annexe system — the occupant or the homeowner?

The occupant has full local control (remote handset or app). We can configure separate app access for both parties if required.

We're planning to build an annexe — when should we think about air conditioning?

The earlier the better. Including air conditioning in the build specification allows for the most discreet pipe routing and electrical planning. Contact us before or during the build if possible.
