Air Conditioning for Garages

Garages converted to workshops, home gyms, hobby spaces or offices need proper climate control to be genuinely functional. Poor insulation and large metal doors mean garages are extreme in both summer heat and winter cold. Air conditioning provides efficient heating and cooling — making the space usable whatever the weather.

Key considerations for air conditioning for garages

Insulation assessment

Garages typically have minimal insulation. The better insulated the space, the smaller the system required. We survey the insulation standard and factor it into our specification.

Door type and size

Large metal roller doors and up-and-over doors lose heat rapidly. We account for this in the capacity calculation — an undersized unit will struggle on cold days.

Electrical supply

Many garages have a limited electrical supply. We check the existing supply at survey and advise if an upgrade is needed to support the air conditioning circuit.

Dust and contaminants

Workshop environments can create dust and particles. We recommend systems with enhanced filtration and advise on filter cleaning frequency for these environments.

Why air conditioning works here

  • Comfortable workspace in all seasons
  • Heat a cold garage in minutes — faster than any fan heater
  • Cool effectively in summer — essential for car workshops
  • Dehumidifies — reducing damp and condensation
  • Protects tools and equipment from temperature extremes
  • Extends the hours you can usefully spend in the space

System type

Garage installations are typically single-split systems. The outdoor unit mounts on the exterior wall, with the indoor unit mounted high on the internal wall for good air circulation across the space.

Frequently asked questions

Can air conditioning heat a cold uninsulated garage?

Yes — but an uninsulated garage requires a larger capacity system. Heat pump air conditioning is still significantly more efficient than electric fan heaters even in poorly insulated spaces. We calculate the right capacity at survey.

I use my garage as a workshop — will air conditioning cope with the dust?

Yes, with the right filter specification. We recommend enhanced filtration for workshop environments and a regular filter-cleaning schedule to maintain performance.

My garage is detached — does that affect the installation?

Detached garages need a longer pipe run and typically require a dedicated electrical circuit run from the main house. This is straightforward for us to handle — we'll quote the complete installation at survey.
