Can Air Conditioning Replace Your Central Heating?

Heat pump air conditioning can heat a room for a fraction of the cost of gas or electric alternatives. But can it fully replace central heating? We look at the honest answer.

Modern air conditioning systems are heat pumps — they extract heat from outside air and move it into your room. This means they can both cool in summer and heat in winter. The heating mode is often overlooked, yet it may be the most compelling reason to install a system.

How the heat pump works in winter

Even when it's cold outside, there is thermal energy in the air that a heat pump can extract. Most modern systems work efficiently down to -15°C or lower outside temperatures. They don't generate heat by burning fuel or using resistance elements — they move existing thermal energy, which is why they're so efficient.

The efficiency advantage: COP

The efficiency of a heating system is measured by its Coefficient of Performance (COP). An electric bar heater has a COP of 1.0 — you get 1 unit of heat for every unit of electricity. A gas boiler typically has a COP of 0.85–0.95. A modern air source heat pump (including your air conditioning system in heat mode) has a COP of 2.5–4.5, meaning you get 2.5 to 4.5 units of heat for every unit of electricity.

At a COP of 3.5, your air conditioning system produces £3.50 of heat for every £1 of electricity — significantly more efficient than gas at current prices in many scenarios.

What air conditioning can replace

In a modern, well-insulated room, air conditioning in heat mode can absolutely replace radiators as the primary heat source. This is already common in Germany, Japan and Scandinavia, and is becoming more common in the UK as new builds improve in insulation standards.

  • Direct space heating in any room — more responsive than radiators
  • Supplemental heating in rooms not well served by the central system
  • Primary heating in garden rooms, loft conversions and annexes without existing central heating
  • Energy-efficient replacement for electric storage heaters or fan heaters

What air conditioning cannot replace

Air conditioning does not heat your hot water, and it cannot supply wet radiator circuits without additional equipment (a hydronic heat pump system). If your central heating also provides domestic hot water and serves the whole house via wet radiators, you cannot simply switch it off and use split-system air conditioning alone — you would still need a hot water solution.

The practical answer

For most UK homeowners, air conditioning is best considered as a complement to central heating rather than a replacement. It provides highly efficient heating in specific rooms — most commonly bedrooms, home offices and garden rooms that are poorly served by the central heating system — and cools in summer, making it a year-round asset rather than a single-season luxury.
