Single Split vs Multi-Split Air Conditioning: Which Is Right for Your Home?
One outdoor unit or several? The choice between single splits and a multi-split system has real implications for performance, reliability and cost.
One of the first decisions when specifying a multi-room installation is whether to use individual single-split systems (one outdoor unit per room) or a multi-split system (one outdoor unit serving multiple indoor units). Both approaches are valid, and the right choice depends on your property, your priorities and your budget.
How single-split systems work
A single-split system consists of one indoor unit paired with one outdoor unit. Each room that needs air conditioning gets its own complete, independent system. The indoor and outdoor units are connected by refrigerant pipes and an electrical cable — that's the entire system.
How multi-split systems work
A multi-split system uses one outdoor unit with multiple refrigerant circuits, each serving a separate indoor unit. A single outdoor unit can typically serve 2–5 indoor units. The indoor units operate independently — each can be set to a different temperature and mode.
The case for individual single splits
- •Complete independence: if one system fails, others continue working normally
- •Simpler fault diagnosis — each system is isolated
- •Rooms can be added or removed from the system independently
- •Often simpler pipe routing when rooms are on different sides of the building
- •Staged installation is possible — fit one room now, add more later
The case for multi-split
- •Single compact outdoor unit — less visual impact on the exterior
- •One electrical supply point for all rooms in many designs
- •Potentially cleaner installation on properties with limited external wall space
- •Single annual service appointment covers all rooms
The reliability trade-off
This is the factor most often overlooked in comparisons. With a multi-split system, the outdoor unit is a single point of failure: if it develops a fault, all connected rooms lose heating and cooling simultaneously. With individual single splits, a fault affects only the one room. For a home where air conditioning is a comfort luxury, this may be acceptable. For a home where it's relied upon for sleep or vulnerable occupants, redundancy matters.
Multi-split systems also require careful specification: Mitsubishi, Daikin and other manufacturers publish approved combination tables listing which indoor units can be connected to which outdoor units, and what the maximum total indoor capacity can be. Working outside these combinations can cause performance issues and void warranties.
The cost comparison
Multi-split equipment is often slightly more expensive than the equivalent single splits because the outdoor unit is a more complex, higher-capacity unit. Installation costs can go either way depending on pipe routing. In most two-bedroom scenarios, the total installed cost is similar for both approaches.
